Your Newborn Session
*My studio is a no shoe area
*Please wear socks
*Nothing you need to bring besides baby and yourselves and perhaps extra bottles(if baby takes one and soother) diapers and wipes.
*Makes sure baby's face is clean before you leave for the session, no eye/nose crusties, etc.
* put baby in something easy to remove--- like a sleeper
*Be flexible with feedings during the session-baby will probably need feeding a little more often during the session.
Since babies are usually photographed naked, the studio will be set at a temperature of 75- 80 to ensure baby is warm and comfortable. If we’re not sweating, it’s probably not warm enough for baby! Parent’s please make sure to wear comfortable loose clothing. I will also provide water and snacks.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You should expect a very calm and quiet atmosphere. My studio is incredibly warm, 75-80 degrees. Newborns lose their body temperature fairly quickly once you unclothe them, so it's essential to keep them warm at all times. Your little one might fuss when he/she needs feeding or special soothing time from mom/dad, but newborn sessions are all about working with your newborn. I have lots of warm comfy blankets and swaddling fabrics. An incredibly gentle touch to help in the peaceful posing of your baby. Most of the posing will occur on a large bean bag designed specifically for newborn photography.
*All wraps/fabric backdrops in my studio are washed after each and every use.
*Head bands and hats are sprayed after each use with organic non toxic sanitizer.
*My studio flooring/surfaces are cleaned with hospital grade disinfectant-(Cavicide)
*All headbands and hats are sprayed after each use with organic non toxic disinfectant spray
HOW LONG WILL THE SESSION LAST
Newborn sessions last 2-3 hours, depending on your little one. Please plan accordingly. Some babies sleep so deeply that posing and changing props are a breeze and things happen more quickly. Other babies are light sleepers and need lots of soothing and extra love to cooperate by falling asleep. Your little one is new to the world and to ensure a smooth session, we will allow him/her to run the show.
WILL THERE BE A MESS
Because newborn sessions are held almost entirely in the nude, the diaper will be off the majority of the time you are in my studio. Accidents happen and there is no need to apologize or worry about if a mess will happen. It’s natural and it’s expected. Just make sure you bring extra wet wipes and diapers. All the blankets/props get washed/sanitized after each session.
Parent Portraits and role as a parent during the newborn sesion
If you desire images of you with your baby, I usually photograph those poses last. During the ‘baby only’ portion of the session, I might ask you to assist in certain poses where an extra set of hands is desired. Other than that, you will mostly sit back and relax while I work to create beautiful images of your newborn.
When your baby needs soothing or feeding, I will leave you with the baby until he/she is sleepy and ready to continue the session.
Wear solid colours and limit patterns. Cream/grey/black/whites are great colours.
WHAT ABOUT HIS/HER SIBLINGS
I love taking family portraits and I can photograph siblings with the new baby before the ‘baby only’ portion of the session begins.
PREPARING FOR THE SESSION
Plan to feed your baby really well before you leave to come to my studio.
Make sure you bring extra bottles (if little one takes them) Babies almost always eat more during a photo session. Keeping the tummy full keeps the baby satisfied, soothed and happy.
Between feeding times, it is very helpful to have a pacifier, *if available/if baby takes one*.
Definitely bring any special props you wish to include in the session: hats, bows, headbands, jewelry, crown, blanket, toy, or item from parent’s job or hobby. If you want a special prop used or need help with ideas, let me know before your session so I can plan accordingly. I enjoy planning theme setups for a few special poses. MAXIMUM 2 personal props
